About this piece:
This quilt is part of a series that explores ideas about protection, longing, loyalty and control, using a variety of visual imagery including small birds, hands, hedges, cages and keys.
A Bird In The Hand focuses on ideas of scale, of how the imposing thorny structure of a high blackthorn hedge can be a formidable boundary to some but provide a safe haven and home for others.
By using digital collage and digital print I’m able to work on fabric in much the same way as I would on paper, combining photographs with graphite drawings. These are printed onto cotton fabrics and machine quilted.
