HE COSTUME & TEXTILE ASSOCIATION for Norfolk Museums is inviting entries to their 25thanniversary open juried competition SILVERY THREADS.
Prizes will be awarded in 3 categories; Wall hangings, 3 dimensional pieces and Garments and accessories. There will be prizes in all categories with the overall winner receiving £1000.
Selected entries will be exhibited at the Hostry at Norwich Cathedral from 2nd to 13th October 2014.

Costume and Textile Association 25th Anniversary Celebration of
Geoffrey Squire Memorial Competition and Exhibition
The Costume and Textile Association for Norfolk Museums (C&TA) will celebrate its
25th Anniversary in October 2014 by holding an open, juried textiles competition and
exhibition on the theme of “Silvery Threads”.
The exhibition will be held in The Hostry, Norwich Cathedral, from 2nd to 13th
October 2014. Following the Hostry exhibition, some entries may be selected for a
temporary exhibition at Norwich Castle Museum.
Submissions are invited for works falling into the following categories:
A – Wall-hung pieces
B – Three-dimensional items, self-supporting
C – Garments and accessories
Entrants may use any textile methods, traditional or contemporary, combinations of
methods, and mixed media with a textile element. Videos, photography and installations
cannot be accepted due to space restrictions.
Selection and Judging will be in two stages:-
Initial selection for inclusion in the exhibition will be by examination of anonymous
images (see below, item 9). Entry forms, and also forms for Registration of Interest, may
be either downloaded from the C&TA website (www.ctacostume.org.uk) or obtained in a
paper version from Jill Sharpe (tel. 01953-788594) or Jenny Daniels (tel.01603-452236).
Selected entries will be judged by a panel of three independent, distinguished
experts. In each category, prizes of £500, £250 and £100 will be awarded. Additional
prizes of £100 will be awarded for the best Student’s entry and the best C&TA Member’s
entry in each category. The Geoffrey Squire Memorial Prize of £500 will be awarded for
the overall “Best in Show” exhibit.
Please read the following pages carefully and keep a copy of your entry form(s) for your
Terms and Conditions of Entry.
1. All items submitted must be the entrant’s own original work, and must not be derived in whole or in
part from a kit. They must relate to the title of the competition.
2. There is no limit on the number of submissions per entrant, but a separate entry form should be used
for each item.
3. Group entries will not be accepted.
4. The work should be new, and not have been previously exhibited.
5A. Maximum sizes for wall-hung pieces (category A) are height 175cm, width 80cm, depth 15cm.
Panels may be framed or unframed, but should not be glazed. They should be prepared for hanging
with suspension points e.g. mirror plates, D-rings, Velcro or battens.
5B. Maximum sizes for three-dimensional items (category B) are height 175cm and a “footprint” of
80cmx 80cm. They should be self-supporting.
5C. Maximum sizes for garments and accessories (category C) are height 175cm and a “footprint” of
80cmx80cm. They should be supplied with an appropriate method of display e.g. “heads” or
dummies. If this is a problem, please let us know.
6. There will be an entry fee of £8 (non-members) or £5 (C&TA members) for each item submitted for
selection. This fee will not be refundable.
7. Entrants will be responsible for arranging insurance cover for their own exhibits while in transit and
during the exhibition.
8a. Entrants may opt to sell their work at the exhibition. A commission fee of 33% will be levied by
Norwich Cathedral on sales.
8b. In addition, at the discretion of the C&TA Committee, an item may be purchased and donated to the
Costume and Textile Study Centre, Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service, to be added to the
collection of contemporary textiles. This item will be purchased at the insurance valuation given on
the entry form.
9. For selection, images of your entry or entries should be sent either by post as a good quality
photograph or CD, or electronically as a digital image (resolution 300 dpi).
Please send a maximum of two images per entry to show the whole item and also a detail.
Each image should be labelled with your name and the category of the entry i.e.. A, B or C.
For example images of your first entry in Wall-hung Pieces Category A should be labelled as:-
<Surname, first name> A 01, and <Surname, first name> A 01 (detail)
Images for selection will be judged anonymously.
Images may be used for publicity, and also in Miscellany, the C&TA 2014 Silver Celebration journal.
Please tell us if the images require photographic credits, and be assured that we will adhere to
standard copyright practice.
Photographs and CDs will not be returned.
10. Packaging and Transport of Selected Entries
Details will be sent to you on selection.
Payment should be made with the Entry Form when sending your images for selection. It can be
either by cheque payable to C&TA or by using BACS transfer. Please see the Entry Form for further
12. The decisions of the selectors and exhibition judges are final.
13. The C&TA reserves the right to reject items which do not meet the competition rules and conditions,
or are significantly different from the images submitted for selection. 3
• Submission of Registration of Interest Forms (one per item) would be
appreciated by 31st March 2014. These may be obtained from the C&TA website
(www.ctacostume.org.uk), or as paper copy from Jill Sharpe or Jenny Daniels (see
above for contact details).
• Submission of Entry Forms with Images and Entry Fee by 9th August 2014.
• Selection of entries for exhibition (stage 1) will be completed by 25th August
Entrants will be notified of the results promptly, either by email or post as applicable.
Please include a stamped, self-addressed envelope for postal notification.
• Selected entries for Judging (stage 2) must be received between 22nd and
25th September 2014.
Details of delivery address will be sent on selection.
• Exhibition at The Hostry, Norwich Cathedral will be from 2nd – 13th October,
2014 (Judging stage 2 will take place at the beginning of the Exhibition).
• The Pamela Clabburn Memorial Lecture with the Competition Awards
Ceremony will be held on Saturday, 4th October, from 3 pm followed by a
Private View at which all exhibitors will be welcome.
